Exit, Pursued by a Bear

I don't know where the stereotype of non-physically active nerds came from, but I really don't think it's true.
For example, I am a nerd.
To an extent.
And I exercise(d).
I mean, I still do, I just haven't in a while for various reasons, among them being shin splints, a cough that won't go away and messes up my pace, and college.
But, as an English major, I don't see why this is.
I mean, one of the greatest physical chase scenes in history was written by Shakespeare:
"Exit, pursued by a bear."
Now, I will be the first to admit that we don't always approach exercise the right way.
Or at least, I don't.
Ever heard of that 10% rule? How you're not supposed to increase your mileage by more than 10% per week?
Well, I basically lived by the 100% rule for about 2 and a half hours once.
5 miles to about 10.5.
Not the brightest thing I've ever done.
But regarding the nerdiness. . .
So I was running down this road that was way longer than I expected it be, and then I realized that it was the longest side of right triangle. The Pythagorean Theorem popped into my mind and I started sorting it out.
As I was running.
As if the cars weren't enough to worry about. . .

When "Short" isn't Short Enough

This is not a sponsored post.

Old Navy is not one of my favorite stores.
Or at least, it wasn't until I realized they have the best jeans for me.
They've got different jeans for different body shapes, and that's great.
I love those jeans because they fit perfectly.
Except in one way . . .
I'm 5'2".
I guess their "short" jeans are based on somebody who must be the same size, but must be like, 5'6".
There are literally about 3-4 extra inches.
On a SHORT.
*sigh*
I went there the other day with my mom and sister, and I tried on some jeans that were nearly half-price with the Labor Day sale.
She brought in the size I was about 4 months ago and they were too big! which is awesome . . .
but they were also too long.
She went back for a smaller pair, and I told her that if they had "Hobbit" lengths, that would probably work.
They didn't.
But still.
Also, as a sidenote, I'm too tall to be a Hobbit.
I'm too tall to be a Dwarf.
I'm to short to be a Human.
I'm too short to be an Elf.
Yep, you're lookin' at the cutest Orc there is.
I wonder if they carry Orc-sized jeans. . . ?

Ramblings of a Fangirl: Dumb People in Comics

Y'know, you've just gotta have a certain respect for people in comic books.
No, no, no, I don't mean the main characters; the heroes.
No, I mean the citizens.
Yeah, them.
The people that can't distinguish between Clark Kent and Superman because of a pair of glasses.
. . . Really, people?
They're the same size.
Have the same hairstyle.
Seem to be nearby a whole lot.
And are never seen in the same room. . .
Granted, not everyone knows Clark that well.
But what about Lois???
She's Clark's reporter buddy and has only been rescued by Superman Lord knows how many times.
You'd think she - the brilliant Daily Planet reporter - would have pieced two and two together.
(On that note, why do we put two and two together? Why not one and one? Anyhoo. . .)
And then there's the people of Gotham.
They have a bit more of an excuse for not recognizing Bruce Wayne as Batman, especially in The Dark Knight, because Bruce you can easily understand. Batman just sounds like, "WGGG RRRR AYYYY?!"
Not exactly conducive to a  fruitful interrogation.
However!
Bruce randomly gets beat up - badly - the same night Batman disappears . . .
And nobody makes that connection.
And he's a hermit for eight years. Batman is also MIA for eight years.
And nobody makes the connection.
Then Bruce comes out of hiding. Batman also comes out of hiding.
And nobody makes the connection.
. . .
The citizens of Metropolis have zero excuses, but the people of Gotham just might have one. . .
Just how much fear gas did Scarecrow pump into that city sewer?

The Capitalization of I

A good friend of mine actually thought of this and vocalized it before I did, but it's a good point.

But really, why do we capitalize I?
It's just a pronoun.
We don't capitalize he.
Or she.
Or they.
So why I?
And it's just a letter.
We don't capitalize "a".

This has actually been bothering me for some time, so y'all have got any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Words We Should Change the Definition of: Adorable

Okay, this is what happens when you have too much to do and you do none of it - you think of words to change the definitions of. But whatever.
So, "adorable".
What does that mean?
When people say adorable, they usually mean "cute", "sweet", stuff like that.
But to "adore" means to: "regard with the utmost esteem, love, and respect; honor" (Dictionary.com).
Hmm. Interesting.
To "be adorable" isn't as cutesy as we've made it.
To "be adorable" is really something everyone should be, not just babies, puppies, and kittens.
Which is unfortunate, because I use adorable a lot.
But sometimes I do use it in the right context.
I wonder if people know that . . .

My Thoughts on . . . Fidelio

Fidelio is one of the best operas ever.
Like, legit.
It's awesome.
The plot's a bit convoluted, and I don't want to spoil anything by trying to explain it, so I'm just not going to.
It sounds kinda rough, but that's just because it's in German. After a while, you get used to it, but there is this really funny part right at the beginning where this guard's trying to woo the jail keeper's daughter, and she's so sick of it that she pounds the table over and over shouting "Nein nein nein nein!"
Funniest. Opera scene. Ever
And it only works in German, so yeah.
But it's an awesome love (and sort of a spy) story, but not mushy. Totally not mushy.
I'd give it a 5/5.
It's really that great.

Any thoughts on my review? Did I miss anything or not give it enough praise? Comment below!

My Thoughts on . . . Carmen

So, Carmen's pretty much one of the most famous operas ever.
Meh.
What would I rate it?
Gosh, probably a 2 or a 3 out of 5.
I'm really not a big fan of it.
Why?
Well, not because it's "too mainstream" -- that really doesn't bother me.
It just feels like there's something lacking in the ending, and if you don't know the ending, I'm certainly not going to spoil it for you. Go watch it yourself.
(Though I did stick a hint in the tags . . . )
The music is wonderful, and although the overture and music from the first and last acts are the most famous, there's some pretty good stuff in between, too.
I have to admit, though, that the first time I watched it, I was struck by the irony . . .
It's an opera set in Spain, where they speak French, performed in Germany, while I was watching it in America, with English subtitles.
(Oh yes, I do suggest watching operas with subtitles - very helpful. Unless you're actually going to one, in which case I'd suggest sticking a libretto in your mother tongue in your bag.)
But yeah, something just seems missing to me. And it's a bit overused (not the same as mainstream).

Overall rating: 2.5/5

My Spoiled Fish

I have this betta fish that I've posted about before.
Other than a near-death experience, he's pretty spoiled.
Like, really.
I went to Petsmart just looking around for a plant for his tank.
Just. Looking.
I come back with new pebbles, a Grecian temple, a cleaning cloth for the tank, and I ran out of fish food, so he got a fresh pack the same day.
He is so spoiled.
God help my future children . . .

The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel ~ My Thoughts

Last Friday, the lastest Batman movie hit theaters.
Last Saturday, me, my brother, and my dad went to go see it.
Not in IMAX - they were sold out - but that was okay: we had a pretty big screen. Besides, maybe the Hobbit will be in IMAX . . . ?
So, first, the movie itself: EPIC.
I LOVED IT.
Definitely gonna have to have a Batman marathon someday after the DKR hits shelves.
I'd give it a 9.5/10.
(The missing .5 is for a personal preference, nothing huge.)
Now . . . onto the more important topic . . .
The Man of Steel . . .
Meh.
I'm not a Superman kind of gal.
Sorry Caroline.
Haha, nope!
I love Batman.
I love Young Justice.
I love Thor (and Loki.)
I love Captain America.
I love Iron Man.
I love the Avengers (read: Coulson).
But I just really can't get into Supes, even though I did watch the entire Animated Series last year.
What really got me, though, was the music they used for the trailer.
Oh. My. Gosh.
This is where I have to interject something about myself.
I am a complete soundtrack nerd.
I have over a hundred of them, and I can generally identify the movie they came from within the first thirty seconds.
So, picture this.
I'm sitting the theater, yeah?
Watching previews, right?
All of a sudden, I hear really, really familiar music . . .
And some mournful woman singing (or maybe a choir boy).
I say to myself, "I've heard this before".
Not FIVE seconds later, it hits me: it's from Lord of the Rings.
Lord of the Rings.
DID YOU HEAR ME?!
I SAID LORD OF THE RINGS!
WHO ON EARTH USES MUSIC FROM LORD OF THE RINGS FOR A SUPERMAN TRAILER?!
You know what I think?
I think the person responsible for finding music for that trailer totally dropped the ball and picked the first thing he could find!
I mean . . . really?
*sigh.*

My evil final writing project . . .

So, for my Development of the English Language class, we got to pick our final writing project from three different options.
I picked something along the lines of "pick a small group that uses non-standard English and write about the differences".
'Kay.
Being the dork/geek/nerd that I am, I picked n00bs. N00bs that speak 1337.
I asked my professor if that was okay.
He said sure . . . and proceeded to inquire what a n00b and 1337 was.
This paper is going to be so fun . . .
